About Brad and Craig

Brad Grunewald and Craig Moffet met in 1973 at Western Illinois University.  After college, Craig moved to Boulder and eventually talked Brad into joining him.  Craig's partner in his health food store had ridden his bicycle across the country, and this notion to travel by bike was very appealing to both Brad and Craig.

They set their sights on New Zealand as a good place to start their bicycle expedition. After biking around in New Zealand and Fiji, they made their way to Australia where they saw a bicycle magazine featuring Specialized's Stump Jumper.  Brad crafted an idea to ride to Mt. Everest on a Stump Jumper and get pictures of the bike on the mountain...so he called Specialized's founder, Mike Sinyard, to pitch him the idea.  He went for it and sent two bikes to Australia.

From Australia, they resumed their journey in Indonesia.  They made their way through Thailand and from there flew to Nepal.  When they arrived in Kathmandu, a good friend of theirs mentioned that their timing was good because the Seven Summits film crew was up at Everest and they could potentially get their expedition documented and filmed.  So Brad and Craig headed up towards Everest base camp on their bikes.

Cameraman Steve Marts was hired to film the Seven Summits climbing tour and expedition of movie mogul Frank Wells and Snowbird Ski Resort's Dick Bass.  Mt. Everest was of course the mountain to climb in the Asian continent.

They were all there when Brad and Craig arrived at Everest base camp on their stump jumper bikes.  Steve Marts actually filmed Brad and Craig as they rode their bikes among the ice seracs at the base of the Khumbu Ice Falls.  John Wilcox of ABC's  Wide World of Sports was also there and filmed Brad and Craig riding in the area of the Hotel Everest View.

This website is dedicated to their 1983 Stump Jumper Expedition to Mt. Everest when they became the first bikers to reach Everest's base camp.
